The first edition of the International Student Film Festival “NEW WAVE” is about to begin. The task to sift and distinguish the best films is not easy. Therefore we engaged highly experienced people in the field of cinema who can objectively and adequately cope with it.

The chairman of the jury is the Bulgarian film critic, journalist and screenwriter – Borislav Kolev who recently made his directorial debut with the documentary – “Stoichkov”.

Prof. Ingeborg Bratoeva-Darakchieva, PhD is another representative of the jury who is a member of the International Federation of Film Critics “FIPRESCI”, a teacher in the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts “Krastyo Sarafov” and in Sofia University “St. Kl. Ohridski” and a professor in department “Screen Arts” at the Institute of Art Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

Karin Yanakieva also joined the jury of the festival with great pleasure. She is a film critic and a representative of the Bulgarian National Film Center.

Another very prominent member is the director Evgeny Mihaylov – former director of the Nu Boyana Film Studios and an award winner from the Golden Rose National Film Festival in 1994. Mihaylov is the director of the films “Home for Gentle Souls”, “The Death Can Wait”, “Canaries Season” and “The Insurance” .

Last but not least – the actress Stefka Yanorova who has great experience not only in the field of theatre but also in the field of cinema. She is known mainly for her part in the movie “Mission London” and in the hit Bulgarian TV series “Glass Home”.

Press Alumni filmi 1st ISFF NEW WAVEThe 1st International Student Film Festival “NEW WAVE” includes in its out-of-competition programme films by graduated students from New Bulgarian University. The main purpose of the out-of-competition programme “ALUMNI” is to introduce their first independent steps towards their   establishment in the cinema industry and to contribute to the promoting of their work.

“The Time of Clouds and Rain” by Krum Yankov is the fiction film which takes part in the “ALUMNI” programme. It is a story about the anxious mood which has been generated by the fear of the time passing by and its irreversibility. Because of this serious plot the film takes the award for young Bulgarian author on the International Video Art Festival “Videoholika” in 2012.

We could also watch “The Blood” – an animation by Velislava Gospodinova. This is her debut film where the blood is considered as either an element of extermination or as a life-supporting substance, as a symbol of death or of the hope for salvation. It has been nominated for best animation on the International Short Film Festival “IN THE PALACE” and has been awarded in the category – best debut on the Golden Rhyton Bulgarian Documentary and Animation Film Festival.

Another animation, which has been included in the “ALUMNI” programme is “The Golden Fish” by Irina Armenkova. A film about the darkness and the cruelty of the city, about the desire for a better world and the price you are forced to pay when you meet the Golden Fish. With this production the director takes the first prize of the animation category of the 16th Student Film Festival, organized by New Bulgarian University.

Very interesting for the viewers will be the combination between a fiction film and an animation in “The Unfinished Painting” by Rositsa Vangelova. During the screening of the film we will be able to feel the drama of a young artist who desperately tries to paint the most suitable eyes for the face of the woman in his paintings but unexpectedly he enters a surreal world created by his own imagination.

The documentary cinema also takes place in the programme. With his short film “DRIFT”, Borislav Dobrev reveals the essence of the youngest motorsport in the world – drifting. He examines topics connected with the automobiles, the technical specifications and the passion of the drivers and the fans.

We believe that this selection will allow us to follow the development of the youngest creators who work in all directions – fiction, animation and documentary cinema.
